This is my second project, a matching numbers 1969 Chevelle. There is nothing special about his car. It is a plain old
307/powerglide car. It has a dark green bench seat interior and a dark green vinyl top. The only options it has are heat
and an AM radio which still works. This car proved to be a test of my skills. It had been in 2 accidents when I picked it
up from the original owner.
Both quarter panels were replaced with new skins. The floors and trunk floor were solid. It had only 1 fender on it at the time of acquisition. I had to get a new right fender, radiator support, header panel, and a few other items for the front end.
The first task was to restore the chassis. I tore down the entire frame down to nothing. All of the suspension was removed, cleaned, repainted to OEM specs and reinstalled. The rear end received new axle bearings, seals, was painted and reinstalled. All new brake lines, shoes, wheel cylinders, and hoses were installed along with a new master cylinder. New bushings were installed on all control arms.
After the frame was completed, the body was lifted off the frame and mounted on a rotisserie so bodywork could commence. New quarter skins, outer rear wheel houses were installed. Some spot welding and patching of the floors were needed as well. After a few months of sanding, welding, grinding, and repairing accident damage, the body was dropped back on the frame, bolted down, reassembled, and sent out for paint. It was painted in the original Frost Green Metallic (GM code 59).
Once I got it back from being painted, it was time to finish her off. While it was away, I managed to collect most everything needed to complete it. The first thing to do was the interior. I had the seats recovered, installed new carpet, reused the original door panels, got a new headliner, and a few other miscellaneous parts were put back on. New exhaust, tires are yet to be put on the car, but that will be taken care of in a few weeks time. Two GM bumpers were put on along with all new chrome trim and emblems.
Look for this car in the South Jersey area in the upcoming 2003 car show season.
